The Southwest, and especially New Mexico, has had a spiritual pull on me even before my first visit in 1991. I moved in 2021 from Louisiana, in the depths of the pandemic, to escape more frequent and powerful hurricanes. The land in the Southwest is dramatically different from my home state of Louisiana. It feels somehow awake and aware, stark, bare yet strangely beautiful. When I look at a scene with the intent to create a photograph, I feel the land looks back. Since moving to northern New Mexico, I've begun exploring new ways of making photographic images that expand my concept of the photograph as art.
The new abstract prints I'm creating are my response to this unfamiliar landscape, to the colors, light, and the plain adobe structures that embody the human history and spirit of this place. I incorporate the sum of analog (darkroom), digital, and painting skills that I've accumulated over four decades into painted photographic images on canvas.
